4-H Afterschool Program
The national 4-H Afterschool program was the main avenue for teen
leadership training this year. The Pine Ridge office developed modules
and conducted training with 15 teens at Crazy Horse High School in
Medicine Root District on Pine Ridge Reservation, and subsequently
placed 6 of these teens as leaders for the Lakota Quillwork program,
funded in part by the SDSU 4-H Afterschool grant. A total of 43 youth
participated in this program, learning the tradition lore and history
of quillwork, and going through the process of preparing and dying
quills, then creating simple bracelets.
