4-H Youth Development

This youth program is comprised of community clubs within Shiprock
Agency. There are eight clubs located in Shiprock, Hogback, Nenahnezad,
Upper Fruitland, Sanostee, Aneth, Red Mesa and Haanaadlii. The partners
include the Shiprock High School FFA youth program, Teen Life Center
and the Navajo Nation Office of Dine Youth.

The objectives for the 4-H Youth Development program are to:

  1. recruit, train and monitor 4-H leaders and volunteers
  2. promote the 4-H youth development programs in all communities on the Navajo Nation; and
  3. participate in leadership development activities.

The 4-H youth were encouraged to participate in the writing
competition sponsored by the Native Women in Agriculture organization.
One of the local 4-H member, Melissa Badonie, made it to the top five
in the writing competition and earned a trip to the IAC symposium held
in Hollywood, Florida. The next year, she won again and earned another
trip to Las Vegas, Nevada.

The 4-H clubs in Shiprock Agency look forward to the annual Bike-a-thon
that is conducted by the Shiprock Cooperative Extension. Trips for Kids
provide the bikes for the 4-H'ers to ride to the Shiprock (rock). The
4-H'ers solicits pledges from sponsors and whatever money is made is
turned in to the St. Jude's Children's Hospital. This is a community
service project of the 4-H clubs.

The impact of the 4-H youth program is positive and highly commendable.
The shy, timid ones are turned into chatter boxes by the end of a
year's time. Each year is a challenge for them to undertake more
difficult projects as they advance their levels of learning.
