Education programs

Food safety education to Kicking Horse Job Corps (after receiving
ServSafe certification): Students between the ages of 15-19 enroll in
Kicking Horse Job Corps Center from around the U.S. on a weekly basis.
To help with the concern for a standard food safety course in the
culinary arts at the Job Corps, I began offering a quarterly class to
provide training in food safety, causes of food borne illness, control
of food through the flow of food, food safety, and helping them
understand Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) by
controlling time and temperature.

Cattle producer education: Each year our office has held an
annual producer's meeting for 160 cattle producers here on the Flathead
Indian Reservation. This year to change the meeting up and increase
participation, I included vendors, specialist speakers, door prizes, a
meal, and a raffle. We increased participation from 12 to 55 and I hope
to continue to increase participation annually by bringing topics that
are important to our producers and allowing them to choose the topics.
This year our topics included:

  • Economical Sustainability: Simple Record Keeping System for the Ranch, 2007 Farm Bill, and Livestock Outlook
  • Ethical and Just Sustainability: Animal Health and National Animal Identification Systems
  • Ecological Sustainability: How Conservation Improvements Benefit your Operation, and Conservation District
