Indian Health Service Program

Dr. Chris Percy with the Health Promotions & Disease Prevention
department stressed the need for health education and activities for
the local communities and allocated some dollars to this effect. The
goals of this project are to:

  1. promote healthy lifestyles
  2. develop community wellness plans; and
  3. enhance nutrition and fitness activities.

The Health Promotions & Disease Prevention (HPDP) program has
implemented various health activities under the Four Corners Wellness
project such as the Just Move It, WINGS, and other fitness programs.
The Just Move It program runs throughout the summer with the twenty
communities hosting a fun 3K/5K walk/run. A t-shirt is given to each
participant that gets their blood sugar checked. The WINGS is a
runner's program with competition at various levels.

BANCAW (Building Alliances for Navajo Communities in Action for
Wellness) is a program that includes representatives from different
communities and organizations. Dine Agriculture Inc. is a part of this
program and Shiprock Cooperative Extension is a member of Dine
Agriculture Inc. A community wellness plan is developed by each
community or organization involved.

The Hike & Bike with the Trips for Kids program was implemented for
children and youth who were obese or diabetic. Referrals were made from
the Indian Health Service. This program includes a summer full of
nutrition classes and a couple of mountain bike camps. It also provided
a Almost Free Bike Repair shop for the local kids.

Similar to the Hike & Bike Program, the Trips for Kids
program promoted an active lifestyle with the use of mountain bikes.
Staff from Indian Health Service, Health Promotion & Disease
Prevention, Shiprock Boys & Girls Club, Shiprock Cooperative
Extension and volunteers collaborated to plan and carry out a pertinent
and enjoyable bike program.
