How do you plan a crop rotation?
Start with the rotation's purposes, the farm's crop mix, and a map of recent field history. A rotation can support soil cover, nutrient management, and disruption of some pest cycles, but no fixed sequence fits every farm.
Define what the rotation needs to do
The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service defines conservation crop rotation as growing a planned sequence of crops on the same land. Its possible purposes include improving soil, reducing erosion, managing nutrients, and interrupting some insect, disease, and weed cycles.
Write down the farm's priorities before arranging crops. A field prone to erosion presents a different problem from a high-value bed with a known host-specific disease. These are possible management benefits, not guaranteed outcomes. Soil type, residue, crops, and farm operations all shape the useful sequence.
Build a field-history map
Divide the farm into management units that are practical to record. They might be fields, blocks, tunnels, or beds. For each one, list recent crops, crop families, cover crops, amendments, known pest issues, and constraints such as drainage or access.

Do not reconstruct plant-back, re-entry, or preharvest intervals from memory.
If exposure is suspected, follow the label's emergency directions and contact emergency or poison-control services. Application, worker-protection, and compliance questions belong with the regulator or a qualified pesticide-safety professional.
Add substitutes before the season changes the plan
